Wine Tasting at Claiborne & Churchill

100 California Wineries

"Our cellar's getting a bit low," I mentioned to my travel buddy last week.

"Well, we'll just have to remedy that, don't you think?"

So off we went to the Edna Valley, that strip of gorgeous land between Arroyo Grande and San Luis Obispo in the Central Coast of California.  Because summer is approaching, we wanted to concentrate on white wine and this small winery specializes in dry whites from the Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris grapes.  Because we arrived late on a weekday afternoon, we had the place to ourselves and the full attention of one of the owners.  What a treat!

Claiborne and Churchill is a small, family run operation, which celebrated its 30th anniversary last year.  The intimate wine tasting room is open daily from 11 to 5.  The fee is $10.00 but is waived if you purchase wine (which we almost always do!).   Not only did we have a flight of five wines, but she offered us three extra tastings and we ended up buying two bottles from the bonus round:  A 2012 Dry Muscat and the 2013 Dry Riesling, both perfect wines for the hot summer days ahead.

This is a lovely part of California and one we will continue to explore HAPPILY for my blog within a blog.
