The Dillon Pinnacles

I stop for rocks!  Why?  Because their stories begin millions of years ago.  In the case of the above pinnacles, located on Highway 50, west of Gunnison, Colorado, the story begins to unfold 65 million years ago--a time when the landscape began to rise.   Massive uplifts of the earth's crust formed the mountain ranges we see today.   Thirty million years ago, ceaseless volcanic explosions in the area created these spires from the falling lava, mud flows and molten rocks.

I am but a blink of an eye in the history of the earth.  But rocks?  They are almost as old as time itself.
