Limestone Houses of Kansas City

After leaving Thomas Hart Benton's home on Belleview in Kansas City, Missouri, I drove down Valentine Road and stopped so many times to gawk at these beautiful homes, I finally gave up and parked.  I  spent the next hour walking around the neighborhood.  We just don't have houses like these in California!   Most of these houses were built in the early 1900's from limestone, quarried from the William Rockhill Nelson site not too far away.  Further research indicated that some of the rock was shipped by rail to Kansas City from a quarry in Carthage.  Stately.  Solid.  Beautifully designed.  These homes are going to be around for a long, long time.
